About Government Model College, Deithor
With an aim to achieve expansion in higher education with inclusion, equity and quality and to enhance access to degree courses in Educationally Backward Districts (EBDs), the Government of India decided to set up Model Degree Colleges in the EBDs. Although initially these institutes are developed as institutes for Higher Secondary and Under Graduate, the government also has a plan to introduce Post Graduate (PG) level / Skill development courses in future as per National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020). With this plan in view, Government Model College, Deithor, Karbi Anglong has been established by the Higher Education Department, Government of Assam under the Directorate of Higher Education with an intention of spreading higher education in the remote and comparatively underdeveloped area of Karbi Anglong. In 2013, Karbi-Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) allotted 35 bighas of land to the Government Model College, Deithor under the Chilonijan Revenue Circle. The funding for the college has been provided jointly by the Government of Assam and Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA). Dr. Dipok Kumar Bora joined as the Principal of the College on 15th September 2020. Under his leadership, the institute grows and he acts as a coordinator for activities concerning the College. The College is affiliated to Dibrugarh University, Dibrugarh vide Government notification AHE. 570/2016/53 dated 15.10.2020. Following Dr. Bora's appointment, 17 (seventeen) Assistant Professors in six departments i.e., English, Assamese, Economics, Education, Sociology and Political Science along with a Librarian have been appointed by Directorate of Higher Education (DHE), Government of Assam as per latest UGC norms/qualifications. At present, the college has a total of 20 faculty members. A total of 63 students have enrolled in the very first session of the college. The college has started regular classes from 28 December 2020.
